Jan Svankmajer is a genius in his mixture of live footage and animation. His work is at once beautiful and disturbing, yet hypnotic in its use of visual style. there are very few animators with his unique style and flair. carrolls Alice was quite adult in tone, something that previous cinematic versions failed to bring across, possibly seeing.

Hugh Cornwell Another Kind of Love [dir. Jan Švankmajer, ]. Interview by Wendy Jackson. Would it be bold to say that Conspirators of Pleasure is your most Surrealist film to date?.

Jan Svankmajer: Conspirators is actually a film about liberation, and about gaining a freedom. It is not art, but a film. Just as, for example, André Breton would not say “Surrealistic painting”, he would.

The Emperor's genius is then regarded as the genius loci of the Roman Empire as a whole. Roman examples of these Genii can be found, for example, at the church of St.

Giles, Tockenham, Wiltshire where the genius locus is depicted as a relief in the wall of a Norman church built of Roman material. Fortunately, I am a great admirer of Czech filmmaker Jan Švankmajer.

I wish not to put a label to his work, but very often the tag 'surrealism' comes into play in describing his 'super-real' and very often, irreverent and dark, animation. Living and practicing his film craft in his native Prague in Czechoslovakia, Švankmajer's vision of the world is uncoloured by chewing gum commercial.

This is exactly how I felt when watching Jan Svankmajer’s Alice () after watching Disney's Alice in Wonderland () (which I had not seen since I was a kid).

I really, truly feel that Svankmajer’s Alice is intended for an adult audience – I definitely will acknowledge that watching this would have sent me running to hide under the. Jan Svankmajer brings the story to life through beautiful use of stop-motion and bizarre, unorthodox props.

Although, my main issue is the film's length, at 86 minutes the movie feels too long and the majestic visuals grow a bit repetitive. Needless to say, towards the 40 minute mark I was losing interest and getting sort of bored. I recently stumbled across Svankmajer's adaptation of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland', and absolutely adored it.

As a result, I decided to check out some of his other films, and ended up finding a short, 7-and-a-half minute film called 'Darkness, Light, Darkness', which can be seen on YouTube HERE.

The thing is, I'm not entirely certain I understand what's supposed to be going on. Jan Svankmajer’s Alice, the esteemed Czech animator’s feature-film debut fromis far more than just a strange, wonderful, and surreal trip set within the charming ambience of an Eastern bloc TV fairytale.

It is a strikingly original attempt to wound the skin of the story and to reveal its body by almost entirely stripping it of Carroll’s language and converting it into a. Nov 3, - Explore { ANIMATION INDEX }'s board "Jan Svankmajer (present)", followed by people on Pinterest.
